OBJECTIVE

A One Health Initiative Task Force was convened by the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2007 to study the feasibility of an initiative that would facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration to implement One Health principles. The Task Force Report led to establishment of a One Health Joint Steering Committee, charged with initial oversight of achieving One Health goals.

A major objective recommended by the Task Force was the formation of a One Health Commission to develop a comprehensive national action plan to attain sustainable integration at the local, national, and global levels.

The One Health Commission will:

• Identify critical needs for integrating the relevant scientifi ccommunities
• Identify strategies to address critical issues
• Set a One Health research agenda and establish new funding lines for research on emerging diseases
• Formulate recommendations for policymakers, organizations, and other stakeholders
• Oversee other major activities in service of the One Health goals
