One Health@UGA, The University of Georgia

2.      Narrative Description

In the last decade, One Health has gained new momentum among medical professionals – both human and veterinary, as well as scientists, particularly in the face of emerging infectious diseases such as Dengue Fever, West Nile virus and enteric pathogens.

One Health @ UGA, now a division of the Biomedical & Health Sciences Institute, embodies an approach focused on developing truly interdisciplinary collaborations that will enhance the profile of UGA in the area of health science, yet with a strong foundation in basic science.

The efforts of One Health @ UGA aim to move beyond preventing infectious diseases toward a more comprehensive, global understanding of health that includes social, physical and other components. The goal is healthier people, healthier animals, and a healthier world. Preventing diseases and promoting health are two sides of the same coin, as is “One World, One Health.”

The Division of One Health at the UGA Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute seeks to promote and expand the ongoing One Health efforts of UGA faculty, students and staff who share One Health’s unified vision towards combating today’s global health threats.
