One Health: Understanding Human & Vet. Diseases from Molecular Cell Biology to Successful Interventions

YOUNG BIOMEDICAL / VETERINARY SCIENTISTS IN EAST AFRICA

International Workshop, Sokoine University, Morogoro, Tanzania

August 1st – 7th 2011

Tanzanian scientists are partnering with an international faculty orchestrated by the American Society for Cell Biology with sponsorship from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to convene a special workshop entitled One Health: Understanding human and veterinary diseases from molecular cell biology to successful interventions. The workshop will train graduate students and young scientists from Africa in basic and applied research on veterinary and human pathogens and disease, including Tuberculosis, Human Trypanosomiasis, Malaria, Leishmaniasis along with viral and protozoal diseases of livestock including, Rinderpest, Theileria, Nagana and FMDV.

The theme of the meeting will be the ways in which molecular approaches to these diseases are leading to novel drugs and vaccines. The workshop will focus on progress in modern approaches to diagnostics, drug and vaccine development. It will also assess the extent to which future strategies can be informed by progress in combating some diseases, e.g., the eradication of Rinderpest.

The Workshop will cover areas including: Analysis of Pathogen Diversity and Evolution through genome sequencing; Functional Genomics & Bioinformatics; Pathogen Entry and Persistence, Immune Cell Biology and Antigenic Variation, Diagnostics based on molecular biology techniques and monoclonal antibodies; Vaccine Development & Drug Discovery; Biotechnological processes and commercialisation; Pre-clinical and clinical testing and development of drugs and vaccines.

The workshop emphasizes student participation through presentations, roundtable discussions, student-led presentations and informal interactions. There will be general themes throughout the workshop aimed at assisting students with Scientific Communication Skills, Research Ethics and Developing Research Proposals and Career Planning.

Participating faculty include: Keith Gull, Sarah Gilbert, Eva Gluenz, Richard Wheeler, Bill Wickstead (Oxford), Eric Rubin (Harvard), John Anderson and Don King, (Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright), Bakela Nare, (SCYNEXIS, USA), Gerald Misinzo, Claudius Luziga, Paul Gwakisa, Christopher Kasanga, (Sokoine).

MSc and PhD students, postdocs and young lecturers in biomedical and veterinary science are encouraged to apply. Students selected for the workshop who reside in East Africa will receive full bursaries to support attendance at the workshop, accommodation and meals, plus reasonable travel costs.
