One of the first people in the world to complete a PhD in One Health, Dr. Helen Chapman is trained in medicine, epidemiology, and environmental health and is passionate about promoting trans-disciplinary health collaborations that investigate and mitigate health risks of humans, animals and ecosystems. She currently serves as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow (2017-2019) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Applied Sciences Program. Her work focuses on Health and Air Quality Applications, promoting the use of Earth observations in public health (“One Health”) applications, such as air quality management and control of infectious disease.

Dr. Chapman received her PhD in Public Health (One Health) and MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Florida (UF). She holds an MD from the Iberoamerican University in the Dominican Republic (DR). Her graduate studies in medicine and public health focused on strengthening global health education, practice and research for mosquito-transmitted, respiratory and water-related disease prevention and control in international communities in Cuba, Dominican Republic (DR), Honduras and Puerto Rico. Her dissertation research examined the “knowledge-action” gap among health care workers regarding adherence to tuberculosis infection control measures in health institutions in the DR.

As a Christine Mirzayan S&T Policy Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, she worked on the Veterans and Agent Orange: 11th Biennial Update consensus study. Prior to her doctoral studies, she completed a research fellowship at the Centers for Diagnosis, Advanced Medicine and Telemedicine (CEDIMAT) and served as adjunct professor at the Iberoamerican University School of Medicine in Santo Domingo, DR. Her policy interests include using the One Health approach to address environmental health risks, including infectious disease control, air/water quality, and food safety and security.
