JOB SUMMARY
The position of Epidemiologist Specialist II:
- Is responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiological activities related to the surveillance, detection and prevention of disease, in particular for foodborne/enteric diseases.
- Assisting with the coordination and investigation of enteric disease cases, clusters, and outbreaks. Requires the ability to coordinate multiple outbreaks and coordinate conference calls and meetings with stakeholders at the local and federal level.
- Responsible for implementing program metrics, establishing evaluation plans, and reporting metric data to internal and external public health partners
- Works as a team project member conducting epidemiologic functions comprising of surveillance, data collection, and data analysis
- Provides presentations and coordinates trainings
- Conducts investigations used in preventing and controlling specific communicable and chronic diseases, injuries, and other health conditions.
- Applies investigation findings to direct public health programs and recommends interventions and/or control measures
- Develops and provides scientific and clinical advice and technical assistance to various public, private, and nonprofit health programs or projects
- Conducts literature reviews
- Assists in preparing reports from analyses of surveillance data, literature reviews and other information using behavioral science, demographic and epidemiological analytic techniques, and evaluation
- Participates in writing grants and other funding proposals
- May provide administrative leadership and technical guidance to lower-level professional, technical, and administrative support staff
- Makes independent decisions and judgments based on their professional education, programmatic experience and training
- Maintains and shares information and data of a very confidential nature.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Contemporary principles and practices of epidemiology
- Research methods, procedures and techniques used in identifying and evaluating disease characteristics
- Contemporary medical methods and practices used in the control of a variety of diseases
- Principles and practices applicable to the surveillance and investigation of diseases
- Public health surveillance
- Computerized database management, data analysis, program evaluation, and literature search
- Knowledge of the performance management (PM) model and continuous quality improvement (CQI) methods in a public health setting

Skills:
- Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Conducting scientific studies required to identify and isolate various diseases
- Compilation and evaluation of technical epidemiological data
 
Selective Preferences:
− Masters of public health with focus on epidemiology and least one year of professional experience in public health epidemiology or a Bachelors degree with coursework in epidemiology, health education, biostatistics, or related field and three years’ experience in applied public health epidemiology. Experience using statistical software, working with different levels of the US health care system and public health system, and working with electronic public health surveillance databases.
