Simposio Una Salud para el logro del desarrollo sostenible (Symposium A Health for the achievement of sustainable development)

Location: Bogotá, Cundinamarca

November 9, 2017

Organizer: Universidad de la Salle

Scope: State/Provincial Event

Fee: None

Open to Public: Yes

Description: Colombia is facing key social and political transformations due to the signing of the peace treaty, which has ended an armed conflict of more than half a century. This conflict occurred in a territory with a high cultural, environmental and ethnic heterogeneity, which shows an epidemiological transition marked by the high burden of diseases and infections and immuno-preventable conditions in places with greater poverty and, at the same time, a high burden of noncommunicable chronic diseases in cities and more developed places, associated with sedentary lifestyles, with high levels of stress and poor nutrition of the population. The war created a social urban-rural gap presented in patterns of health inequity. Currently, our country faces multiple challenges due to the low perception from community of the importance of health teams as agents of development, to the lack of installed capacity in the territories, to the difficulty of working in transdisciplinary teams to control health/disease conditions. We will have speakers from México, Italy and Colombia, sharing the next topics:

1. ONE HEALTH CONCEPT IN LATINAMERICA. Dr. Juan Garza- UNAM, México.

2. FIRST RESULTS FROM THE JOINT NEOH AND EURNEGVEC EUROPEAN SURVEY TO EXPLORE THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN HUMAN, ANIMAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SECTORS IN EU COST MEMBER COUNTRIES, ASSOCIATED AND NEAR-NEIGHBOR COUNTRIES” and “ONE HEALTH APPROACH” IN DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION PROJECTS - USE OF ACARICIDES TO CONTROL TICKS IN AFRICA: IMPLICATIONS IN PUBLIC HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH. Dr Daniele de Meneghi, Universitá degli Studio di Torino- Italy

3. RURAL WOMEN EMPOWERMENT: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE 2030 AGENDA (SDG) in the Colombian post-conflict. Dr. Natalia Cediel, Universidad de la Salle-Colombia.

4. REFLECTIONS TO ACHIEVE 2030 AGENDA THROUGH PROMOTION OF ONE HEALTH CULTURE. Dr. Efrain Benavides, Universidad de la Salle-Colombia. Everyone is welcome!

Introducing One Health and the Link between Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence at the Animal Abuse Leadership Summit

November 3, 2017

Organizer: Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office Animal Abuse Unit

Scope: State/Provincial Event

Fee: $10 Suggested Donation **Free Admission for Police and Animal Control Agencies**

Open to Public: Yes

Description: This year our theme is going to be related to using animals as a tool for investigations. We are seeing more and more domestic violence cases where the animals are involved and are considered to be a part of the family. The animals may not always be abused, but there are times when the victims are unwilling to leave because they do not have a place for the animals to go. I am currently working on a case now where I was able to assist the Victims (with the help of Rescue Well) with finding boarding for their dog, who was also a victim of the incident. The family considers him a part of the family and they are finally going to be reunited this weekend after over a month of recovering from their injuries.

We also have a review of all of the new animal cruelty legislation that was passed, including the new mandatory reporting of animal cruelty for veterinarians. We have a lot of great speakers coming, as always, and a lot of people coming from near and far!! This year, we hope to give you tools for investigations to assist the entire family.

Reaching UP

Location: Mesita, Pueblo of Laguna, New Mexico

November 9 - 12, 2017

Organizer: American Veterinary Medical Association

Scope: Local Event

Fee: Free

Open to Public: Yes

Description: The Reaching UP program is a partnership between the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Native America Humane Society (NAHS), and the communities it serves. The 2016 and 2017 clinics have been funded by the Banfield Foundation. The goal of Reaching UP is to positively impact animal health, animal welfare and public health in underserved populations by providing high-quality, high-volume (HQHV) spay and neuter and targeted preventive care services, including rabies vaccination and parasite prevention, in underserved areas. By combining HQHV spay/neuter with community healthcare education that places an emphasis on preventive care, we hope to increase recognition of the value of consistent, quality veterinary care for these communities, including its positive impact on public health. We use veterinarians specifically trained in high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter, and make multiple trips at strategic times to the same area, to ensure we can sterilize a sufficient number of animals to achieve population management goals while preserving a high standard of care. Volunteer veterinarians and veterinary students facilitate our ability to tap opportunities for community education and provision of preventive care. The reciprocal benefit is that exposure to these unique communities can help students understand how differences in experiences, traditions, values, and socioeconomic conditions can affect the veterinarian’s ability to deliver veterinary care; foster creativity in delivering education and services; and increase their appreciation of “One Health”.
